Second barbet passes Gundog test.

The Gundog Club Level 1

On Saturday December 13th 2008 Nénu completed her seven-week Gundog Club training course and took her Level 1 Hunting Retriever Field Test. There were seven dogs up for assessment (6 from the course and 1 “extra”) – 4 HPRs, 2 Labs and Nenu. She was by far the youngest at just 9 months, the next up in age being 18 months and the oldest 3 years I think. The course trainer was Huw Jones of Ffynnongain Gundogs. He has an enormous wealth of experience and competes at International level. He has worked with many breeds of gundog and did a wonderful job with us all throughout the course; he was full of information and anecdotes and taught us all an enormous amount as well as being great fun.

We were on first and I was fetching Nénu from my van at the time so did not hear the assessor say to the others “Oh it’s a Labradoodle” but as I got closer I did hear the comment “Oh, Irish Water Spaniel then” to which I pretended to take great umbrage and explained about the Barbet! At the end of the test she said she was going to go home and read up about the breed so I gave her the Club web address, which is why I’m not naming her here as she might read this! Joking apart, I can thoroughly recommend any of you to go on a similar course – the assessor was really friendly and encouraging, not in the least intimidating and did her best to put everyone and all dogs at ease; she also gave a lot of advice as to how to improve and progress.

Nénu did extremely well in the first, “Obedience”, section and didn’t drop a point, but unfortunately did not perform to quite the same standard in the retrieves! Until 4 weeks ago she was almost “perfect” on the retrieve and was delivering to hand very nicely …. BUT …. whatever the cause (whether it is the onset of hormones or just the “teenage rebellion” stage ) she has certainly lost her consistency at the moment! However she did manage to do well enough on the day and so passed the test. There are now two Barbets with this qualification as Bepop passed her test last year!
