Douai Dog Show

Bright and early on Saturday 12th June we found ourselves waiting outside a large exhibition hall waiting for the rest of the UK contingent to arrive. Out of the small UK population of barbets, three were taken to the Club Saint-Hubert du Nord dog show recently in Douai, northern France about 1 1/2 hrs drive from Calais. The purpose was threefold; gaining the opinions of two judges on two separate days of showing, confirming our export pedigrees and of course socialising with other Barbet owners.

Booking the show was a challenge - a combination of French language web site, relatively high prices, poor exchange rate and not really knowing what we were signing up for, made for a roller coaster ride of confusion, elation and amusement. But it all worked and we recieved our tickets for both days through the post, a few days before we left home.

So dog passports arranged - starting a minimum of seven months before any trip is essential - we set off from the UK. The sat nav found our destination, Parc Gayant expo, a large modern exibition building, the tickets were the right ones and we were in. We'd made arrangements to meet Alain Lanckmans a French Barbet owner and breeder, who was helping us with the confirmation process and general translations. Not easy because we did't know what he looked like, but we were easy for him to spot, some lost non-french looking types with Barbets.

We'd made arrangements to get our dogs confirmed by French judge Jacques Goubie. Confirmation is the standard way in France. You take your dog along to a show when it is over a year old together with your dog's provisional documents, and if your dog has all the attibutes necessary for its breed, the judge will grant a full pedigree. An exception is made for export pedigree documents (which is what we had) but we wanted to do the full thing. We were delighted when all three were confirmed. All we've got to do now is find a way of getting the documents and 23 euros to the Societe Centrale Canine (French equivalent of the UK kennel club). Probably a return to that roller coaster ride.

To the show itself. Actually 2 judges on two separate days. The exibition hall is a modern building and the rings were clearly marked out. There was a red exibition carpet covering the whole of our ring and the whole thing reminded us of crufts except that it was an unbenched show. The judge has a steward and a secretary. As the judge looks over each dog he dictates his comments to the secretary. Obviously one can hear them as they are spoken, they may even be in a language you understand, but you also get a copy of the written report. We liked this approach, so often in the UK you pay your money, don't get first, second or third, and leave really none the wiser. On day one the written reports were in English, perhaps more than we could have hoped for, and the second day in French. Actually best of all were the overall results and contents of these notes, with excellents and very goods.
