This past weekend, Betsy and Bepop attended the 6th annual Beta Gundog Weekend at Claydon House, Buckinghamshire. The two day event covered all aspects of working dogs and had all the 34 KC registered gundog breeds on display as well as some unregistered! Arriving at the venue on Saturday morning we quickly found our spot in the rare gundog breeds marquee.

While Bepop has limited experience at canine events, it was to be Betsy`s first visit to such an event. We quickly put up the promotional material in our section ( we only had a weeks notice to put it all together, so thankyou Fiona for your help) and then we were into the demonstration ring for the first parade of the day. We were in the ring with `retrievers' and `spaniels' and after parading round, all the exhibitors were invited into the centre to be interviewed about their breed one at a time. This was nerve wracking for me but both dogs took it all in their stride. We were to repeat the process several times over the weekend with both dogs proving to be expert performers. Over the weekend we had the chance to chat to other exhibitors with rare breeds who were able to give us good advice on how to progress and wished us luck with out project. It was also interesting to meet owners of breeds related to the `barbet' but who had never seen one in the flesh. Giving the dogs a break from the marquee meant we could explore the rest of the show, particularly the water trials. We had hoped to raise the profile of the barbet with a view to some of Betsy & Bepop`s offspring going to working homes, however, having watched the competitions taking place I am sure both Betsy and Bepop would benefit from and enjoy training and taking part in competition. They have already shown apptitude to retrieving from water not suprisingly. All in all, it was a successful event with both girls proving to be excellent ambassadors for the barbet and a good introduction to us for promoting the breed.
